JavaScript vynalezl Brendan Eich v roce 1995 a se staly standardem ECMA v roce 1997.

ECMAScript je oficiální název jazyka.

Verze ECMAScript byly zkráceny na ES1, ES2, ES3, ES5 a ES6.

Od roku 2016 jsou verze pojmenovány podle roku (ECMAScript 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
